Netiquette IQ Blog Of The Day - Acceptance Netiquette

Acceptance Netiquette

        “Vini, vidi, vici.”
—Julius Caesar

Congratulations! You have been given a positive answer on your job application.  All offers, benefits, money items and conditions have been accepted. Although a brief celebration is in order, there is much more to be done.
This is a period to be particularly mindful of good Netiquette. During this time in the hiring process, be consistent with your tone. Not to do so can inspire buyer’s remorse.
Here are some recommended Netiquette processes to follow:
1)       If you are going to accept the position be immediately forthcoming, any delay might be interpreted in a way detrimental to you
2)     Graciously thank all involved, recruiter, hiring manager, references
3)     Stay in communications until day one. Return all calls and messages promptly
4)     Ask for next steps – seek clarification
5)     Do not offer surprises, objections or postponements
6)     Make no assumptions
7)     Readjust your focus and stay that way
8)     When all items are successfully signed and delivered, submit your resignation.  If done by email, maintain good Netiquette! Change all of your email and social network accounts to the proper new information.  It is poor Netiquette to have your old company references visible to anyone, particularly if they are a competitor
9)     Establish your Netiquette processes for the new position
10) Show no regrets at any time and continue to show enthusiasm
11) Do not make additional requests unless they are minor – do not ask for any more compensation – this can be extremely detrimental
12) Ask questions when needed but make sure they are really necessary
13) If some assumptions or considerations do change, address these immediately!
14) Honor any commitments you have made
15) Show a willingness to start early

It would be greatly discouraging if you have an offer rescinded because of avoidable mistakes.
Always keep in mind that it is rare for any job opening not to have had many applicants. This means that the hiring manager can fill the position with another candidate.

Additionally, some companies have a mandatory probationary period. Even if they do not, there will probably be more particular attention given to you. As mentioned earlier, good Netiquette at this time is very important.

Finally, the beginning of this part of your career is an ideal time to strengthen your email etiquette, solidify your communication skills and establish your on-line reputation!
Good luck and good Netiquette!
