Netiquette IQ Technical Term Of The Day - Graylists - Why They're Important!

Greaylists, as defined below, are used to identify spam. As I have written in my book (see following) these look to selectively filter "good mail". Blacklists, on the other hand, completely prohibit any traffic from getting through to destinations. That's why it is critical to attempt second and third sendings, if a reply is not received, particularly when expected.

As noted below, graylists will allow mail if a second sending of the message is made.

Remember, Netiquette also entails process not just politeness!

A graylist (also spelled greylist) is a list of e-mail addresses or domain names a spam filter can use to identify suspected spam. If a message arrives from an address or domain on the list, it will be quarantined and then delivered to the subscriber only if the sender attempts to send the message again within a certain period of time. Once a sender has been recognized as legitimate, its address is removed from the list and future messages from that address can pass through the filter unhindered.
